The mission of Ballet Ambassadors is to give children and teens in schools, afterschool programs, and homeless shelters the chance to share the stage with professional dancers in costumed adaptations of the ballet classics, original ballets, and world dance productions. Since 2001, over 20,000 children and teens in New York City’s five boroughs, on Long Island, and in Westchester have taken the stage in Ballet Ambassadors productions. Hector Aponte, the Bronx Borough Commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, addressed a citywide meeting of Parks personnel following our ‘Nutcracker’ with the children of the Hunts Point Afterschool Program by saying, “Ballet Ambassadors brought Lincoln Center to the South Bronx.”
Arts Education Programming:
The jewel in the Ballet Ambassadors crown is our Ballet-in-a-Day program. We start with workshops at the beginnning of the school day, progress to a full run-through, and take a lunch break. Then that same afternoon, up to 250 children confidently strut their stuff with us on stage in costume to the music of great composers including Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Stravinsky. We also offer longer residencies tailoredt to each school’s needs. Our repertoire includes ‘The Nutcracker,’ ‘Swan Lake,’ ‘Firebird’ for elementary schools, ‘Firebird’ for middle and hgh schools, ‘The Unicorn’s Secret,’ ‘Dance Around the World,’ ‘Othello,’ ‘The Great Gatsby,’ and ‘Romeo & Juliet.’ All of our programs fulfill the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and the NYC Department of Education Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts.
