Organization Description:

Founded in 1974 by Jonathan Hollander, the Battery Dance Company performs a repertory of 50 pieces in its home space in Lower Manhattan and in venues throughout New York and the world. It promotes dance education in schools through its Dance in Schools program and offers rehearsal and performance space to aspiring dancers and choreographers. Since 1981, it has hosted the Downtown Dance Festival featuring local and international dance companies on the Great Lawn in Battery Park. BDC’s Dance in Schools programs provide opportunities for the whole school population to experience a live dance performance, as well as receive hands-on training, coaching and mentoring. It often partners with schools to develop programs tailored to the needs of students. Long-term interactive arts-in-education residency projects can be implemented in many cases.
